1. What is Chinese DOI?

The Chinese DOI Registration and Service Center, abbreviated as Chinese DOI, independently conducts DOI business externally. The Chinese DOI website is www.chenadoi.cn.

Chinese DOI is the earliest DOI registration service in the Chinese language field and also the first DOI service in Asia. Jointly managed and operated by China Institute of Science and Technology Information and Beijing Wanfang Data Co., Ltd., a DOI registration agency (RA) officially authorized by IDF. Chinese DOI provides services in accordance with DOI international standards and IDF policies. Each registered content resource will be assigned a globally unique DOI, and through this DOI and DOI parsing mechanism, dynamic and persistent links to content resources can be achieved.

In early 2007, the China Institute of Science and Technology Information and Beijing Wanfang Data Co., Ltd. jointly applied for and obtained the registration and management rights of DOI in the Chinese field, becoming the China DOI registration agency (RA) authorized by IDF. The Chinese DOI service officially began operating in July 2007. This is an important step taken by China in the standardization of digital publishing and information content services industry. Chinese DOI not only provides a globally unique identifier for Chinese digital resources that complies with international standards and norms through localized and public welfare services, but also promotes the construction of an open resource linkage system based on DOI that is in line with the world, thereby promoting the collaboration and win-win situation of various industries upstream and downstream in the digital content industry.

2. The business scope of Chinese DOI

As of March 3, 2023, the Chinese DOI system has served more than 8295 customers, covering academic journal publishing institutions, research institutes, university laboratories, book publishers, preprint paper publishing institutions in various disciplines in China, as well as domestic and foreign commercial academic publishing companies, professional institutions, Internet companies, etc. The total number of registered DOI data has exceeded 36.94 million, including 8002 journals, more than 400 university dissertations, 2 book publishers, 2 conference paper publishers, 3 preprint paper institutions, and 80 research institutions. According to IDF statistics on RA registration, Chinese DOI ranks second among the 11 global RAs.

The Chinese DOI registration service mainly includes six main resource categories: journal papers, degree theses, conference papers, scientific data, e-books, preprint papers, etc.

3. Chinese DOI provides scientific data DOI related services

Scientific data is a very important scientific and technological information resource. In recent years, the publication of scientific data in China has been increasingly recognized by the scientific community. Following the approval of the Network Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2015 to officially publish China's first data journal, "Chinese Science Data," a number of scientific data journals have emerged in recent years, represented by the Journal of Global Change Data. Similar to scientific literature, scientific data also requires the use of permanent unique identifiers for identification. The long-term and stable nature of DOI can provide a permanent identifier for the utilization of scientific data, and is conducive to the long-term citation and reference between scientific literature and scientific data, effectively promoting the discovery and sharing of scientific data. The joint publication of journal articles and scientific data based on DOI has achieved good results, gradually becoming a data publishing model suitable for the current academic research and dissemination environment in China.

Chinese DOI provides DOI registration and parsing functions for scientific data, which can register DOI numbers for scientific data databases and datasets, and dynamically link to scientific data raw resources through scientific data DOI parsing. At present, there are a total of 80 research institutes, universities, and other institutions that use scientific data DOI services in Chinese DOI. As the infrastructure for data publishing and services, scientific data DOI has also become a hot topic of concern for scientists and research institutions, mainly playing an important role in the publication, citation, and integration of scientific data with scientific literature.

If you are a scientific data research unit and wish to join the Chinese DOI system, please feel free to inquire at any time.

1. Crossref proxy registration instructions

Crossref is a reference link service system based on DOI to link literature citations across publishing house service platforms. Several renowned academic publishers jointly founded the non-profit organization Publishers International Linking Association, Inc. (PILA) in early 2000, responsible for managing and running Crossref services, and providing various services such as citation links to member publishers based on DOI.

Crossref is the earliest and largest DOI registration agency (RA), with a current DOI registration volume of over 120 million. Its citation link services include linking references to full texts. If the original citation (or reference) of a literature has an online version and is registered with DOI, users can use the Crossref link button set in the citation to directly link to the publishing house webpage where the citation is located, and obtain citation abstracts or full text information.

In 2013, Chinese DOI signed a cooperation agreement with Crossref to provide various Crossref services to Chinese users. Chinese DOI has utilized the Chinese DOI system and Crossref system for joint services, providing a combination of internationalization and localization services to hundreds of domestic publishing institutions. Institutions that require the following services can contact us to inquire about the situation.

2. Crossref's DOI registration and citation linking service

Crossref has nearly 5000 member publishers from 100 countries, registering over 120 million DOIs for their respective digital publications. Crossref not only requires member publishers to register DOIs for all their publications, but also requires member publishers to search for DOIs for references (which may have been registered by other member publishers for the original reference), and use the found DOIs to link to the original reference, thus forming a literature cross linking network between member publishers. Registering DOI on Crossref makes it easier for foreign readers and authors to search for it, making it more suitable for enhancing the international influence of English journals in China. The number of DOI resolutions (DOI clicks) for Crossref in 2020 exceeded 1.7 billion.

3. Crossref's similarity check (formerly CrossCheck) service

IThenticate provides technical support to help detect plagiarism in papers. Member users upload suspicious papers through the client, and then the system compares the paper with published literature in the similarity check database. Finally, the similarity between the suspicious paper and the published literature in the database is reported to member users, expressed as a percentage, and similar texts are marked.

4. Cited by cited link service for Crossref

Authorized members can query and integrate metadata registered by other member publishers on Crossref for indexing and linking purposes. Through the OAI-PMH interface, there are currently over 120 million registration data available for members to use. After IP authentication, users can use all or part of the content in the metadata repository.

1. What is DataCite?

DataCite has been providing permanent identifiers (specifically DOI) for scientific data and other research results since 2009. It is a globally leading DOI registry that provides a complete set of services for creating, searching, referencing, linking, and using research results for scientific data repositories and their management institutions.

DataCite adopts a community owned and co governance work management model. Under such an organizational structure, organizations can actively, flexibly, and quickly respond to the needs of the research community. DataCite values trust, transparency, and openness, with all DataCite metadata publicly available to the community and all software being open source.

By joining DataCite membership, research service institutions can register DOIs for any type of research results, ensuring their discoverability and citation, and achieving interconnectivity between results. The metadata related to the results submitted during DOI registration by institutions will be shared by the DataCite member community. In addition, DataCite also develops various additional services to assist member institutions in connecting and sharing research results with a wider range of research fields.

At present, DataCite's members manage users including publishers, data centers, libraries, government agencies, archives, universities, research institutions, etc. DataCite has registered 38 million scientific data DOIs, has over 270 organizational members, collaborates with 1200 organizations from 50 different countries, and has signed more than 2600 repositories.
